CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“For a friend with an understanding heart is worth no less than a brother.”

Hunter’s leather jacket flowed behind him as he moved quickly before spotting something moving ahead. Without making a sound, he ducked behind a rusty engine assembly while giving a hand signal to Trigger. The alert trooper responded quickly and also ducked down, though with less cover around him he was forced to rely on the shadows at the side of the dock rather than any significant physical protection.

“What do you see?”

Hunter licked his lips as he watched one of their foes move ever closer. The man wore heavy industrial clothing, with a metal plate over his chest and shoulders. His black hair was a scraggy mess, and yet he moved with the bearing and skill of a fully trained soldier. He then whispered back over the network.

“Yeah, I’ve got movement…And it’s close. Hold your fire. I’ll take care of him.”

Hunter could feel all the old training coming back to him as he waited patiently. The skinsuit barely affected his movement, leaving him as quick and agile as he’d ever been. That confidence remained even as he looked more closely at the man.

How are these people packing military grade hardware?

The man’s head was covered with a cap fitted with flaps that dropped down over the ears. More worrying for Hunter, he carried a military surplus bullpup pulse rifle. Though long abandoned by the Republic’s armed forces, the electrical slug blasters of the past were still a dangerous threat. The metal darts could burst through flesh and bone with little effort and were even capable of puncturing a skinsuit if close enough.

Just a little closer.

The man took another step and Hunter leapt into action. He moved from the shadows without a sound, striking the man hard in the side of the neck with the side of his fist. It was a chopping motion rather than a punch, and the impact was brutal as it sounded. The blow snapped the man’s neck with ease, and he instantly crumpled to the ground. Hunter helped lower him before he could make too much noise just as two more appeared. One was dressed in the same kind of unusual array of gear, but the second was surplus combat fatigues and body armour. His head was half-hidden behind a ballistic helmet with integrated visor. They both carried bullpup pulse rifles and stopped to look for their comrade.

“Look,” said the soldier, “At the skimmer. There’s a survivor. We need to take him back alive. He needs to be questioned.”

Hunter knew he had to act, and fast. Using the rifle link as a club he stepped out and brought it across with all his might against the soldier’s face. The impact slammed the visor back against his nose and sent him staggering away. Trigger leapt from cover and moved in to help while Hunter turned on the other.

“Oh, I see you,” said the man with a thick accent, “You’ll join the others before the day is over.
